Questions 1-5
Pai loved, treasured and respected her grandfather all the way throughout the entire movie. This was not the same for Koro. He treated her very badly and he didn’t really want much to do with her because of her sex. An example in the film of their conflict was when Koro was teaching the boys how to play the taiaha and Pai was watching and “trying to learn. Koro turned around and told her to “get lost” Niki Caro used that dialogue and also an over the shoulder shot together to make us feel sorry for Pai. The purpose of this combination was to make us feel as we were right there listening to Pai being told off by Koro. In the real world, you will go to great lengths to learn from people you admire and respect.

Questions 6-10
After Boy had smoked the cigarette he walked down the road. Out of his mind he fell off the side of a bridge into the water. The town weirdo pulled him to dry land and put a blanket over him. Boy started to have flashbacks of when his mum died and remembered that Alamein wasn’t there when Rocky (his younger brother) was born or for when his mum died. The film cut shots to a long shot of Rocky standing with a sparkler as he slowly stars to approach Alamein. Once he reaches Alamein he says “Sorry for what I did to mum”. Alamein grabs Rocky by the shirt, when Boy comes in and says “Let go of him!” Then it cuts to a mid-shot to show Boy’s angry as he screams and hits Alamein “You weren’t there, you weren’t there when she died”. The dark lighting is to show Boy’s rage. This scene shows us that Boy is the adult not Alamein because Alamein was going to harm Rocky.
